Botanical name: Syzygium aromaticum. Synonyms – Eugenia aromatic, E caryophyllata.

Extraction method: Steam distillation of crushed leaves.

Description: Clove is a long lived evergreen tree up to 15 metres with glossy green leaves, fragrant red flowers and purple fruit. Originating in what is now Indonesia it was first introduced to Europe by Marco Polo and initially traded by the Arabs, followed by the Portugese and then Dutch. Cloves have since been introduced to Africa and Tanzania is the worlds largest exporter.

Actions: Analgesic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, aphrodisiac, carminative, expectorant, stimulant.

Common uses: Traditionally used for toothaches, and topically applied in massage, compress and ointment for relief of arthritis rheumatism and sprains. Diluted to 1% it can be used as a topical antiseptic.

Cautions: Potential skin irritant and sensitizing. This oil is toxic and should not be taken.
