Botanical name: Mentha piperita

Extraction method: Steam distillation of partially dry leaves.

Description: Is a perennial herb with fragrant deep green leaves which grows to a height of 100cm. It is a hybrid from two plants M.spicata (spearmint) and M.aquatica. Menthol is the main component of the oil giving it the characteristic peppermint smell and taste. It is native to southern Europe and is now cultivated in Australia, North and South America, India , Morocco and widely throughout Europe.

Actions: Analgesic, anaesthetic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, astringent, carminative, cholagogue, decongestant, diaphoretic, digestive, hepatic, nervine.

Common Uses: Is used in liniments for relief of muscular and joint pain, soft tissue bruising and contusion , insect bites and neuralgia. Cold compresses to the forehead may relieve head ache and migraines. It is one of the best oils for digestion and may relieve indigestion, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, bowel spasm and flatulence. It may be taken internally for irritable bowel syndrome with a dose of 0.6ml per day for an adult. Taken as an inhalation (either direct or with steam or in a vapouriser o diffuser ) Peppermint oil clears the head and may aid concentration and fatigue. It is very beneficial for colds, influenza and sinus problems. In a dilution of 1% or less it may relieve skin irritation and itching.

Cautions: Non-toxic, non-irritating and occasionally sensitising. It is generally recommended to avoid use on the face of infants and small children. Caution should be exercised when taking it internally as those with lower levels of menthone and pulegone are safest.
