Botanical name: Cymbopogon citratis and C. flexuosus

Extraction method: Steam distillation.

Description: A prolific growing tufted perennial grass with numerous stiff stems that grows up to 2 meters and can be cut several times a year. There are two types, Cymbopogan citratis possibly native to Sri Lanka, widely cultivated and called West Indian lemongrass. C. flexuosa is the Indian lemongrass called East Indian lemongrass and India is the main producer.

Actions: Analgesic, antidepressant, antimicrobial, antiseptic, astringent, carminative, deodorant, febrifuge, galactagogue, insecticidal, nervine, tonic.

Common uses: The clear refreshing oil is uplifting and aids concentration. It is a very effective insect repellent and can be used in toning and cleansing of the skin although can irritate sensitive skin. It is useful for musculao skeletal injuryies. It is a stimulant to the digestive system and its antiseptic properties make it useful in a vaporizer to disinfect air.

Cautions: Non-toxic. May be irritating and sensitizing on some people.
