Botanical Name: Mentha rotundifolia

Plant Family: Lamiaceae

Plant description: The leaves are broad, dull green in colour, wrinkly above, whitish beneath and often densely woolly. The flowers are pink or white, in tapering terminal spikes.

Part used: The leaf

Harvest: The leaves are harvested when the plant is well developed but before flowering.

Active Constituents: 1-3% volatile oil thymol and carvacrol.

Actions: Antiseptic, carminative, febrifuge

Uses: Applemint is mainly for its antiseptic properties and beneficial effect on the digestion. The concentration of volatile oil in apple mint has a relaxing effect on the stomach and reduces flatulence. It can be used for the treatment of fevers and headaches.

Dosage: Infusion – pour one cup of boiling water on one teaspoon of dried herb. Leave to infuse for five minutes. Drink up to one cup three times daily.

Cautions: Avoid in pregnancy. Apple mint is toxic in large doses
